Tooth whitening is a service we offer where we have you come in and have your teeth whitened in order to rid them of any discoloration. Discoloration of your teeth can happen as a result of numerous factors such as staining foods and drinks, age, tobacco use, trauma, and medications. Teeth whitening is an option available to individuals with healthy, natural teeth and gums. It is not something we recommended for those who have fillings or false teeth as a result of other restorations.
What to Expect
There are a few different ways to whiten your teeth, both over-the-counter and with an appointment at the dentist. Procedures and products done and used at our office are going to be more effective and efficient than purchasing, say, whitening gel, wash, or toothpaste at a drug store. In-office bleaching is one of the fastest ways for you to receive whitened teeth.
When you come in for your teeth whitening appointment, we apply the whitening product directly to the teeth. This bleaching product might be used in conjunction with a laser, special light, or heat to effectively whiten your smile. The whitening of a smile is a result of the bleach breaking down stains into smaller, less concentrated parts. You can expect to start seeing results of the process usually within 30 to 60 minutes; however, the best outcome involves multiple visits.
Benefits of receiving a whitening in our office include a stronger bleaching agent, customized whitening for your specific teeth, and additional protective measures. Since the bleaching agent can affect areas such as your gums, we can place either a gel or a shield of rubber to protect your gums during the procedure. We can also conduct an oral exam prior and thoroughly go over your medical history to determine if bleaching is the best course of action for your situation.
If you have any questions or concerns about teeth whitening or if it’s right for you, feel free to contact our office at your earliest convenience. As always, it’s important to be mindful of excellent oral hygiene through twice daily brushing, daily flossing, and daily use of antiseptic mouthwash to keep your smile as healthy as can be!
